Friday, 14 May 2010 00:00

On Sunday, the twelfth annual Walk for Autism was held on campus by the Autism Spectrum Resource Center (ASRC) in cooperation with Choate Rosemary Hall.

This is the third year running the walk has been centered on Choate’s campus. The walk/run involved a 5K course followed by activities at booths on the field in front of the Winter X. So far $151,000 has been raised with a projected $155,000 total. The ASRC, based in Wallingford, organized the event to promote awareness and raise money for Autism support programs. With the $155,000, the ASRC, which is not part of the national autism organization, Autism Speaks, can fund itself for the entire year.

The event has become a galvanizing spring ritual that activates Choate’s community spirit on a broad scale. Mrs. Sandy Shanahan, wife of Headmaster Ed Shanahan, said, “Mr. Shanahan and I brought it to Choate. I got to know Julie Hipp, who runs the ASRC, and we thought that the Choate campus would be a great place to have it, so we brought it here.” With the event’s new location came a large number of Choate volunteers, who have made the event a success since it arrived.
