According to Shu Saha ’11, he and Vice-President Madeleine Foote ’11 have met with Headmaster Ed Shanahan to discuss ideas about possible changes to the dress code policy. Student Council representatives recognize that Mr. Shanahan is calling for heightened dress code, but details are yet to be confirmed.
Sixth Form Dean Nancy Miller said, “There are three things I know for sure: next year, for both girls and boys, there will be no hoodies, no sweatshirts and no denim.” Having noticed many female students’ “abuse of denim” on campus, Mrs. Miller contended that female students must be as responsible about their school outfits as their male classmates, who have been following a stricter dress code than theirs. In an email to The News, Headmaster Ed Shanahan first said, “I know nothing about ‘the new dress code.’” In a follow-up email to The News, Mr. Shanahan commented, “I told Shu Saha that there were several options being considered by the deans office [regarding the dress code issue].”
In an interview with Dean of Students Mr. John Ford at deadline, Mr. Ford confirmed Mrs. Miller’s assertions pertaining to the dress code changes. Mr. Ford said, “I’m sure in next year’s dress code we will not allow sweatshirts of any kind. Also, we will be calling girls out much more often about appropriate dress.” When queried about denim’s position in next year’s dress code, Mr. Ford said, “The wearing of any kind of denim pants is up for consideration.” Mr. Ford also confirmed that dress code regulations will be enforced more strictly come next Fall.
Student Council Logo
According to Student Council President Shu Saha ’11, variations of the new Council logo may be used for letterheads, posters, etc. The new logo will consist of a blue circle and a white Romanesque column building. Pictures may be seen on the Choate Student Council Facebook page. The reason for a new logo, Saha said, was that “The Student Council manages many projects and events throughout the year, so there was a need for a unifying theme to bring all our work together.” He contended that the Student Council’s Facebook page and logo are “the first steps to creating a memorable and reputable Student Council image, and we hope that they will catch on.”
Students-for-Students T-shirt
Student Council representatives recently voted on the design for next year’s Students-for-Students T-shirt. The representatives proposed multiple designs, but the design by Sally Lindsay ’13 was chosen. According to Student Council adviser Katrina Linthorst-Homan, nce Mr. John Ford, Dean of Students, approves the design, plans to sell the T-shirt (in a yet-to-be decided neon color) on the first days of school next year will be confirmed.
SAC Dance
The Student Council, Foote said, “laid claim to the first SAC dance of the year.” During the latest meeting, representatives decided upon a neon theme, for which, she added, the Students for Students T-shirt would be suitable.
Free Ice-cream
According to Foote, the Student Council recently ordered 390 ice cream sandwiches, planning to sell each for $1 at the P-Cup games on Saturday. Ice cream may also be sold on Field Day, and all proceeds benefit Students-for-Students. It is also possible that Mr. Ford will hand out ice cream to the student body on Wednesday after Senior Speeches. Representatives also discussed the importance of restocking on vanilla flavoring for the coffee at the Daily Grind.
Car Wash
This Wednesday will be the annual Student Facilities Carwash. According to Saha, Student Council members will be down by the Winter X with “soap, water, snacks, and having lots of fun.” He considers this fundraising event not only a “gesture by the Student Council to facilities staff to recognize the work they have done” but also “a fun bonding moment for the Student Council representatives.”
Amendment
Freshman representative Jack Katzenstein ’13 drafted a new Class Committee Amendment, proposing to remove the representatives’ responsibility to hold class committee meetings at least once per month. Ms. Homan recognized that “We need to have a forum for feedback.” According to the document, feedback will instead be garnered at class meetings. For third formers, who do not elect representatives until the winter term, representatives from other forms plan to take turns attending their meetings until their own representatives are elected. |
