Daily Grind
This week, the Daily Grind really did “rev up the excitement,” as Student Council President Jin Ha ’08 promised last week, and attracted many more customers to buy coffee during conference periods. After getting permission from Mr. Cook and Mr. White, the student council has welcomed two student singing groups, the Maiyeros and Lilith, to perform in the Humanities Rotunda. According to Jin, the sales of the Daily Grind were noticeably boosted thanks to these student performances, and he said, “We did very well; some students stayed for the whole of the conference period to watch the performances.” So far, both groups have had successful performances in the Rotunda while boosting the Daily Grind’s profits. Next Friday, the Whimawehs will be singing, so be there to catch the performance and the drinks.
CHIP Proposal
Recently, a proposal has been brought up by the RTA (residential technology advisers) to extend the functioning of the CHIP website past curfew hours. As Jin Ha stated, many students have been annoyed by the shutdown of CHIP at curfew, cutting off not only the emails but also the assignments posted on the website. Thus, this proposal has been raised to help those students that are desperately in need of an extra minute to download that assignment. Jin Ha agreed that the proposal sounds at least fair since “everything on CHIP is academic related.” However, the practical question remains: since lights out still exists, how can students use the internet after curfew? Students should not get too excited yet as the proposal has only been brought up, and it will be some time before the Student Council actually works out the details and votes.
Green Cup Challenge
As a part of the Choate community’s drive to reduce energy consumption, Choate is competing with 31 other schools in the Green Cup challenge to see who can save the most energy during the period from January 25 to February 22. To facilitate this, the Student Council has assigned members to work to improve energy efficiency in several public buildings—including the Carl C. Icahn Science Center, the Humanities Building, Steele Hall, Hill House, and others. These Student Ccouncil members will talk to the managers and heads of those buildings to make sure that the buildings are complying with the cup requirements, for example turning off lights and heaters when not in use. Finally, during the course of the Green Cup challenge, occasional special programs will be organized, including student sponsored movies and other events.
