Girls Swimming and Diving

The Girls Swimming and Diving team stayed at home to face-off against rival Deerfield this past weekend. They came away with a convincing victory over the Doors, to bring their record to 5-0. The final tally of the matchup between the rival schools was 103-75 in favor of the Dolphins. There were outstanding efforts across the board from each of the Girls who swam in the meet. As usual, all the girls relay teams were unstoppable, winning each relay race by a noticeably large margin. Strong individual performances in the swimming events were put in by Caroline Wilson ‘09, Katie Kaspar ‘10, Co-Captain Val Atwood ‘07 and Laurel Lau ‘08. By the time the swimming events were over the Dolphins had already guaranteed themselves a victory.

Even though many would think beating your rival is sweet, Carlin Dacey ’08 made this victory all the more satisfying. Just a week after breaking the 22 year-old Choate record in 1 meter diving, she shattered the New England record previously held Irene Corsak of Loomis Chaffee. The previous New England record was a score of 256.2 and it was 29 years old. Carlin scored a 271.2 on her one meter dive, which dwarfs the previous record. Carlin came into to the season setting high-standards which she easily passed. “Getting both records were definitely my goals for the season, and I’m really excited that I could follow through with them as well as I did this early in the season.” This is victory is another stepping stone to a season in which Western New England, and New England Championships are well within reach. The Girls Swimming and Diving team are poised to finish a historic season.

Boys Swimming and Diving

The Boys Swimming and Diving team suffered their fourth loss of the season, this time to rival Deerfield. The final score in the home meet was 96-90 in Deerfield’s favor, leaving Choate’s record at 2-4. This is the second dual meet of the season in which the Boars have lost by a margin of 6 or fewer points. A few seconds lost on times here and there and the Boars could easily have an excellent record of 4-2 on the season. Deerfield was able to beat Choate by earning low-place finishes which earned them the necessary points to walk away with the win. As Dan Fallahi ’09 said, “The difference in the meet was one person on our team scoring in 1st place rather than 2nd.” It was the first time that Deerfield had defeated Choate in Boys swimming since 1992, ending an astounding streak of 15 straight years of losing. With four dual-meets left on the season, the loss will just motivate the team to improve and compete much better. Choate will attempt to end the season on a positive note and go in strong to the Western New England and New England Championships.

Boys Ice Hockey

The Boys Hockey team had to travel up to Deerfield, Massachusetts to face-off against the Deerfield Doors. The Doors stunned Choate by a margin of 4-2. Choate clearly out-classed the Doors in their first meeting, snapping them off the hinges by a score of 5-2. The loss leaves the Boars with a 9-3-1 record on the season. In the losing effort against Deerfield, goals were scored by Oussama Sabky ’07 and Mark Goggin ’09. Max Mastrella ’09 bluntly stated, “We just played bad.” The loss puts a damper on what has been an excellent season so far, but Choate will be ready to rebound. Undoubtedly one of the biggest games left on their schedule is a matchup against one of the top teams in New England, Taft whom they tied 3-3 in their first meeting. With 12 games remaining on the schedule, Choate has an excellent opportunity to finish as one of the top teams in New England, and to do extremely well in the New England Championships in March.
