On Saturday, January 28th, the Varsity Wrestling team failed to continue Choate’s glorius winning streak against Deerfield Academy. Everyone on the team faced a tough match, but five out of fourteen won their matches, contributing to the final score of 24 to 41. Lane Franklin ’09 wrestled hard till the very end and pinned his opponent twenty seconds before the end. Ryan Mead ‘08 won by forfeit, and Christian Duffy ’08 fought throughout all three periods to come out with 8-7 win in 145 lb weight class. Captains Frank Bertossi ’06 and Greg Struges ’06 also won their matches. Bertossi kept his match until the end and won 4-1, and Sturges continued his undefeated record by pinning his opponent. The Boars face Loomis Chaffee and Williston Northampton on Wednesday.
Boys Varsity Squash battled against Andover and Belmont Hill on Saturday, January 28th. Although the boys lost their first match against Belmont Hill 3-4, they still proved to be one of the strongest teams in New England and won their second match against powerhouse Andover 4-3. Number one and two spots faced tough losses against ranked players, however, Choate’s firm depth maintained. Zach Remsen ’07 and Tucker Bryan ’08 won both of their matches showing Choate’s deep ladder. Chip Robie ’06 also won both of his matches as number six. He played physically and mentally hard as he rebounded from 8-2 in his 5th game against Belmont Hill and won 10-9. Michael Koh ’08 faced tough opponents as number three, but his level of play dominated Andover player in the end. Overall, Choate played consistently in both matches and now has a record of 10-4.
On Saturday, January 28th, Girls Varsity Hockey traveled to Groton, Massachusetts and came out with a big win against Lawrence Academy. In the first period, Lawrence Academy scored the first goal, leading the game. In the second period, Ashley Bairos ’06 tied the game with an assist from Hilary Knight ’07. The game all came down to the last period where Choate gave up a goal in the beginning. However, with six and a half minutes to go, Knight tied the game, and seven seconds before the buzzer, she had a great assist by creating a breakaway chance for Bairos who scored the winning goal. Goalie Joce Yokow ’09 made many tremendous saves, helping lead Choate to the 3-2 victory.
