Fashion Forward

You see them at the Ex, in the mail room, and at the gym. You play with their dogs, say “hello” to them on the path, and baby-sit their children when you’re feeling nice. If you start to act up in school, you can expect an email from one of them, and it just might be CC-ed to your parents. Anyway, my point is that the teachers here mean a lot to this school. Not just in their knowledge, friendly natures, or generosity, but also in their tremendous senses of style. As such, I would like to present the long overdue FACULTY EDITION of Fashion Forward: It’s time to recognize all those hip adults whose remarkable sense of style goes unnoticed.

Mr. Stewart is a perfect example. Next time you’re sitting in World History five minutes after class has officially ended, waiting for Mr. Stewart to wrap up his thorough lecture on Genghis Khan, check out that man’s duds. Notice how the delicate shade of blue in his shirt compliments his sharp brown trousers. Then focus on his tie. The tie is very important because I have found that Mr. Stewart displays his fashion genius through his tie. The beauty of Mr. Stewart’s tie selection is that he disproves all previously-conceived notions of color coordination. Blue pants, white shirt, green plaid tie? Black pants, blue shirt, yellow tie? Why not?! This man understands that the fashion possibilities are endless.

Speaking of ties, you can tell that certain male faculty use special care when selecting a tie. Mr. Goodyear, Mr. Mills, and Mr. Burns all understand the beauty and elegance in a cutesy patterned tie. Don’t forget Mr. McCatty - he takes things to the next level with bowties. Mr. Timlin knows a thing or two about neckties as well. (note: Mr. Timlin did not start wearing ties to school until he became a dean. Before that, he wore bellbottoms and concert tee-shirts to class.)

Let’s not ignore those chic female faculty members. We’ve got Ms. Miller, Ms. St. - James, Ms. Dingwall, and Ms. Beste, just to name a few. I particularly admire Ms. Shea’s cozy sweaters and laid-back attitude. Indeed, I must also mention Ms. Lease and how terrific she looked at a trustee dinner last week. If you’re looking for a trend, what all these women have in common is that they each have their own unique sense of style. They know what they like and they wear it well. For example, I am sure that Ms. Miller wore long flowing skirts before they were popular at Choate. She doesn’t follow the bohemian hippie trend; she SET the bohemian hippie trend.

All in all, the Choate faculty is a well-dressed bunch.

Best Dressed - Girls: Bridget Vaughn ’08. Amazing athlete, great girl, and a terrific sense of fashion.

Best Dressed - Boys: John Goods ’06. That boy sure is spiffy.
