The News interviewed several incumbent student leaders as to what their goals are for the current school year. This is what they had to say:
Sam Cabot ’08
Head Boy Prefect
I hope that all of the prefects will exercise their duties responsibly, and to their full extent. For myself personally, I hope to become a better leader. I haven’t really had any leadership opportunities up until this point, and I am excited for the challenge this year. I know it’s probably going to be tough for the first term or so, but I think I’m ready to fill this role.
Jin Ha ’08
School President
One of my goals is to improve the connection between the Student Council and the student body; we can do this through each form’s class committee meetings and more public announcements. Furthermore, with this better communication, we can address the issues that the really do concern the students, instead of laboring over idle trivialities. The Student Council will also continue on the road of sustainability with the Green Cup and Hydro Cup challenges. The importance, conservation, and appreciation for clean water sources will also be one of our main focuses this year. Additionally, the Student Council is hoping to be more involved with service to the Choate and local communities.
Tom Ryoo ’08
JC Representative
Overall, I’d like to really take advantage of my leadership positions instead of simply fulfilling the required duties by trying to come up with novel ideas or engaging myself in various activities. For example, as a 6th form JC rep next year; I hope to make regular visits to as many dorms as possible to discuss recurring problems or even to remind students about academic and personal integrity.
Paul Gaffney ’09
JC Representative
My biggest goal for us as an entire school would be to have as few hearings as possible. We look to achieve this goal by helping to improve academic integrity awareness by making informative visits to dorms and keeping the school updated about our actions as a comittee. We want to make students conciously aware of their actions in regard to academic integrity and give them practical alternatives for breaking the honor code.
Stephanie Choi ’09
JC Representative
We are hoping to go around to dorms occasionally to talk to people in smaller groups to inform them about issues that have come up and to not make similar mistakes. Most people never face the JC so they do not really know what it’s like so it should be our responsibility to inform the whole Choate community of what we actually do. The newly elected members seem very responsible and perceptive and I’m sure will provide great insights during the hearings, which hopefully we won’t have too many of. I am very eager to work with all of the JC members this year.
