Recent Accomplishments: Now in his fourth year of Choate Cross Country, Krokus was elected the sole captain of the team. Chris also leads the squad with his consistently strong finishes, including a strong second place finish against Taft and Trinity Pawling, and a close third against Loomis and Deerfield. Krokus currently holds the sixth form and school record of 17:24 on Choate’s difficult course.
Most Memorable Moment: Krokus’ most memorable moment in the sport occurred at his very first New England Championships, a meet held on a challenging Hotchkiss course in ice and snow. Despite the unpleasant conditions, Krokus finished solidly in the varsity race, witnessed a course record by an Exeter runner, and saw the collapse of Mike Morrill ’06, all of which made quite an impression on Chris in the early years of his career.
Training: In between the cross country and outdoor track seasons, Krokus takes his running very seriously. “In the winter, I train with the Lyman Hall indoor track team. Summer training is hard because I’m alone in Minnesota, so I run on the long, straight roads at home and mix up speed and distance runs.” Chris’ favorite in-season workout is called “slow intervals,” which the team does on Thursdays and consists of “relatively fast laps around the football field, followed by a few minutes of jogging.”
Pre-Race Ritual: On Fridays, the team’s head coach Ned Gallagher leads the team in “Ned-itation,” followed by a shorter meditation and race visualization session.
Season Goals: Krokus hopes to lead his team to a Founders League victory, which is quite possible given their strong dual meet record so far. Although he has achieved All-Founders League status several times in his career, Krokus’ personal goal this season is to be All-New England, which requires a top fifteen finish at the New England Championship.
