Top Performers

By Anthony Cozart ’09

News Reporter

Every week, Choate athletes step up in critical situations and help their team to victory. The News feels that these athletes deserve recognition as top performers. This week’s top performers are Girls Varsity Water Polo player Annie Oxborough-Yankus ’08 and sophomore Boys Varsity Lacrosse goalie Jon Maddalone ’10.

Annie Oxborough-Yankus, a senior member of the Girls Water Polo squad, had a monumental performance against two-time defending New England champions Loomis Chaffee, scoring six goals. These six goals helped propel the team to a 10-8 win, marking the first time in two years that Choate has beat Loomis in girls’ water polo.

Jon Maddalone, one of two Varsity Lacrosse goalies, dominated against Northfield Mount Herman and the Kent School. In his first Choate start, he helped the team beat Northfield Mount Hermon 10-5. In that game, he managed to save 64 percent of Northfield Mount Hermon shots, while only letting in five goals. Maddalone also played well against the perennial powerhouse Kent team, again letting in only five goals for a 7-5 victory. Playing an extremely important position in lacrosse, he has been helped tremendously by Choate’s defense unit, to which he credits his recent success. Congratulations to this week’s top performers and good luck to Choate athletes in the upcoming week.
