On the Ice With... Christine Valente '11

By Paul Scarinci ’10

News Staff Reporter

Hometown: West Haven, CT

Position on team: Forward

Past Individual Honors: As only a freshman, Christine won the highly competitive Choate Athlete of the Week on January 11th. According to Choate’s athletic website, “Christine torched Andover in the team’s first game of the New Year with 2 goals and 2 assists. As one piece of Coach Riepenhoff’s fantastic recruiting class Christine and the team have built a strong record of 7-3 and look tough to beat.”

Ice Hockey Experience: Christine has been playing hockey for the last 12 years for both the West Haven Youth Hockey program and the CT Polar Bears.

Off-season training and other sports: “[In the off-season] I play in the National and New England Development Camps,” said Christine. “I also play soccer and softball at Choate.”

Goals for the season: “Win New England’s,” said Christine in a confident statement. The girls team, after winning last year’s New England title, have been performing at a very high level even though one might call this year’s team “a rebuilding year.” The team does have seven freshmen on the squad; however, the team has shown no sign of inexperience as they are ranked 6th in New England with a 12-3-2 overall record.

Future goals: “I really want to play Division I Hockey in college,” said Christine. She is only a freshman, but her quality of play has turned heads from top college ice hockey programs around the world.

Favorite Aspect About Hockey: “I love playing and being on a team,” said Christine. “I also like the competitiveness and the rush of adrenaline that comes with every play.” Christine, a forward, has greatly contributed to the team with 12 goals and 9 assists.

Pre-Game Rituals: “Before every game, I simply warm-up with the team, tape my stick, and listen to music in the locker room,” stated Christine.

Favorite Pump-Up Song: What a Feeling (Techno).

Favorite Motto: “Do the little things and the big things will take care of themselves.”
