On the Board With...Carlin Dacey'08

By Ben Millard ’10

News Staff Reporter

Form: 6th

Sport: Diving

Hometown: Boston, MA

Individual Honors: Last season at Choate, Carlin received the Excellence in Diving Award, along with her second All-American selection. Carlin has won the Western New England’s competition twice and finished second and third at New England’s. She also placed 5th and 7th at AAU Nationals on the three-meter and one-meter board respectively. Carlin currently holds the New England record for six dives, which she broke at the last diving meet last year by twenty points, also breaking the Choate and pool record. “I got my first ten on the first dive, and so that was fun,” said Carlin.

Experience: Carlin has been diving since she was in fifth grade. Her career started with a Boston club team, and then she started to dive at Choate. Now a senior and a Captain of the Diving team, Carlin keeps a car on campus to drive to a club team in Connecticut.

Off-Season Training: Carlin does not have a set training routine because of the rigorous academics at Choate. She usually practices for two to three hours: two hours in the pool and a half an hour to an hour of dry land practice. “In the fall term, I usually go once or twice a week” Carlin said. Last spring Carlin got permission from the school to dive outside of school, so she was going about four times a week. In the summer, Carlin said she practices “every day, twice a day, so like seven hours in the pool, just because I have to make up all the diving I missed during the school year.”

Favorite Part of Diving: “I know this is going to sound really corny but, the rush.” Carlin said almost instantaneously. She described it as, “Right before you go, you are a little scared, a little nervous, but pretty excited. And then you get in the dive and you can feel if it’s really good, and you just know when you come out that it’s going to be a really good dive, and you come up and you’re going to get a really good score, I think that’s the most fun.”

Goals for Season: Carlin has set some good goals for this season starting off with a win at New England’s. She hopes to break the eleven-dive record, which she was two points away from breaking last year. Her rival beat the record, which Carlin described as “a blow, but she was really nice about it.” The record stands at 444 point, and Carlin’s personal best is 438 points.

Future Goals: Carlin has already signed with Northwestern University in Chicago, which is a Big 10, Division I diving school. “I’ll be diving a lot, and hopefully I’ll get a lot better, and try for senior Nationals.”
