Recent Accomplishments: John Moorhead, as a co-captain of the Choate Boys’ Varsity Soccer team, led the Wild Boars to a respectable 9-8-1 season, including a recent 2-1 victory over Deerfield. As an outside left defender, Moorhead did not have much of a chance to rack up the stats and score goals left and right. Despite this, Moorhead was able to score a goal in the Andover game played earlier this fall. With his highly competitive nature and composed play, Moorhead played consistent shut-down defense all year. Coach John Ford said, “John has done well…he works very hard and is always one of the toughest and most determined.”
Soccer Background: Moorhead has played soccer nearly all his life. Starting at the age of five, Moorhead played on teams in the fall, winter, and summer seasons until he reached high school, when he started playing year round on premier soccer clubs. Is it me, or do you think he loves soccer too?
Season Goal: This season, Moorhead’s main goal was to lead his team to the play-offs and be competitive. Unfortunately, the Wild Boars failed to qualify in this year’s very competitive Founder’s League. Said Moorhead on his season goal, “As a captain and as a player, it would have been an honor to lead a team on a play-off run, and I am sorry I was unable to make that happen this year.”
Memorable Moment: Because of his competitiveness, Moorhead rarely sits out of a contest, according to Coach Ford. Two weekends ago, when the varsity squad traveled to Avon Old Farms, Moorhead was sidelined with an unplayable ankle injury. During that time, he witnessed an amazing comeback by his team. Moorhead commented of the game, “I was sitting on the bench and we were down 4-1 in the second half. Nick Jones ’09 scored to make it 4-2 and then our goalkeeper, [Christian] Kelso [’09], came up with a huge penalty kick save. After Nick Jones scored two more goals within three or four minutes of each other to tie the game at 4-4, it was a really exciting game to watch and I was really upset I couldn’t play and participate in the contest.” As time ran out, the score remained 4-4, and Choate earned an impressive comeback draw against a very strong Avon lineup.
