Choate sophomore survives fall Off of indoor track

By Steven Choi ‘10

News Staff Reporter

Two weeks ago, Emelia Lartey ’11 fell off the indoor track in the Winter X. Emily, as she is called, was running on the indoor track around 7 PM following her daily workout routine at the time of the fall. A native of Ghana, Emily now lives in Washington, D.C. At Choate, she resides in West Wing. Entering this fall as a new fourth former, Emily came to Choate to follow her passion. “My interests lie in Track and Field and basically anything to do with track,” says Emily. “I’m a runner, and I hope to be the best in New England.”

“One day, I was running the track at a late hour,” she said, retelling the dramatic fall. “There were only about five people around here. I had my spikes on, which I knew I shouldn’t. I was going really fast, and I couldn’t stop myself, so I slipped through the railings and fell onto the volleyball courts.” Wearing spikes, which are running shoes generally worn for a better grip on outdoor surfaces, can make a runner more prone to accidents on the indoor track. Because of her high speed and the surface of her shoes, Emily could not stop at the turn of the track. However, to the amazement of many, Emily was able to land on her feet. Today, only two weeks after the fall, she once again runs at full speed.

The accident has not affected Emily’s morale in the least. She continues to pursue her goal of racing in the 2012 London Olympics. Her records in track are among the best on campus.

Even those who had never met Emily were supportive after the accident. “I feel really bad,” said Ian Chan ’10. “I hope that she fully recovers and that this situation will never happen again.”
