Deerfield Academy
Deerfield’s Koch Center opened to students and faculty
March 8th. The building features a dining hall, in addition
to hosting special events, recently hosting Deerfield’s Green
Cup Challenge dance. The building will also serve as a new
meeting place for students, faculty, and staff. A particularly
popular feature of the center is it’s vast windows situated
throughout the building, which offer impressive views of
campus.
Northfield Mount Herman
Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby spoke to students
of Northfield Mount Herman on March 29th. Jacoby, who
is an op-ed writer, addressed the student body on a variety
of issues, specifically on foreign policy and America’s role as
a global police officer in dealing with Islamofacism. NMH,
which is known as a very liberal school, had a heated question
and answer period, in which students presented.
St. Paul’s School
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named
Tobi Olopade, of St. Paul’s School a National Achievement
Scholar on April 4th. The scholarship program recognizes
particularly outstanding black American high school students.
To be eligible, a candidate must take the Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or the
PSAT/NMSQT, among other requirements. This achievement
is especially significant in that only 800 students are
selected as finalists from a pool of 140,000.
Lawrenceville
On April 12th, two Lawrenceville fifth form students
signed letters of intent to two Division I basketball schools.
Suleiman Braimoh who plays forward, and Porter Braswell
who plays guard, are planning on attending Rice University
and Yale University, respectively. The two boys were cocaptains
to the Lawrenceville Big Red varsity basketball
team, which 18-11 for the year. Lawrenceville coach Ron
Kane was ecstatic at the selection of two of his players to
Division I teams.
Philips Academy Andover
On February 20, Andover placed second in the North
American Invitational Model UN Conference held in
Washington, DC. Forty-four students from Andover
attended the conference, in which 18 won awards.
Andover students competed among 2500 students from
114 high schools around the country. The Model UN
allows students to enact mock UN sessions in which
writing, debate, and negotiation skills are vital to success.
Exeter
From early April through mid May, the Lamont Gallery
at Exeter will host a photography exhibit entitled “Return,
Afghanistan-Photography by Zalmai Ahad,” brought to
Exeter by the nonprofit organization Joy og Giving. Zalmai
Ahad was born in Afghanistan, only to be forced into
exile in 1980 during the Soviet occupation. Twenty three
years later, he returned to his country, only to discover it
embroiled in war. He described his exhibit as his search
for hope in a war torn country.
