"Sydney White" Provides Light Entertainment
Movie Review

By Allie Huttler '11 and Molly Renehan '11

News Reporters

“Sydney White,” a play off of “Snow White,” is one of a number of recent movies premiering in theaters. Directed by Joe Nussbaum, the movie incorporates the events of “Snow White” into the everyday experiences of a college freshman, beginning with the fact that Sydney lives with seven boys analogous to Snow White’s seven dwarves. 21-year-old Amanda Bynes stars as Sydney White. Bynes has previously acted in other movies similar in genre to “Sydney White,” including “She’s the Man,” “What a Girl Wants,” and “Hairspray.”

Viewers of the movie have widely varying opinions. Some assert that it was “extremely stupid and not worth the money” while others feel it was a cute story. “It was really cheesy and incredibly predictable, but I loved it,” said Antea DeMarsilis ’11.

We agree with Antea: we could guess in advance every event in the movie, but it still held our attention. We thought it was well directed, had an interesting plot built around “Snow White,” and had a great, adorable ending. Amanda Bynes played her part well, and the director used some great techniques to hook us into the movie and hold our attention. Also, even though we are not in college, the movie still incorporated many things that even we as high-schoolers experience every day.

This movie is more directed towards girls; boys don’t seem to be amused by it. Kyle Smith from the New York Post even comments that “Sydney White” is “a cute comedy for (teen) girls.” So, girls, are you looking for Friday night plans? Here’s an idea: “Sydney White” has a one hour and forty-seven minute playing time and is rated PG-13. It is showing in theaters nationwide and will be playing for another month or so. Don’t miss it.
