Top Performers

By Anthony Cozart ’10

News Reporter

Every week, Choate athletes step up in critical situations and help their team to victory. The News feels that these athletes deserve recognition as top performers. This week’s top performers are Boys Varsity Baseball pitcher Michael Bozzi ’08 and Girls Varsity Crew star Sarah Barnekow ’08.

On Wednesday, April 16th, Mike Bozzi ’08 pitched in Choate baseball’s 8-6 victory over Kent. Bozzi pitched for the first six innings, followed by Matt McCullough ’08 who closed in the 7th. In his six innings, Bozzi had ten strikeouts, while giving up five runs—and, he says, “Some of them were un-earned.” Bozzi said that his pitching “…gave our offense enough opportunity to come back.” With his pitching keeping the squad alive, Choate’s offence overcame a 5-3 deficit and went on to beat Kent.

On Saturday, April 12th, the Choate Girls’ Crew Team faced their first contest of the season, Pomfret, at home. Co-Captain Sarah Barnekow ’08 led the girls’ team to a 4-0 victory over Pomfret by stroking Choate’s first boat. In crew, the rower in the “stroke” seat or the fourth seat in the boat, sets the rate at which the rowers take strokes. Barnekow said, “We did well. I think we were prepared mentally and physically.” Barnekow’s leadership set the necessary rhythm for the first boat to beat Pomfret’s first boat by the substantial margin of 21 seconds.

Congratulations to this week’s top performers and good luck to Choate’s athletes this upcoming week.
