Every week, Choate athletes step up in critical situations and help their team to victory. The News feels that these athletes deserve recognition as top performers. This week’s top performers are Boys’ Varsity Baseball catcher Garrett Horan ’08 and Girls’ Varsity Softball pitcher Carly Evans ’09.
Garrett, a post-graduate catcher, is a key player for the varsity baseball team. He not only works diligently with all the pitchers, but also is a powerhouse at the plate. Last week, he had two singles, two doubles and more importantly three runs batted in a very successful week for Choate baseball. He had the game winning RBI single in the sixth inning to beat Avon Old Farms, in a very exciting matchup between two of the top teams in the Colonial League. His hits were crucial to the fast start of the baseball team. In the field, Horan has also been quite reliable, catching all innings in the three games last week.
Varsity Softball pitcher Carly Evans pitched extremely well last week, winning both of her games. She had an outstanding performance against rival Deerfield Academy, allowing two hits and one run in a 16-1 blowout victory. Along with a great performance on the mound, her batting was of a similar quality, going two for four at the plate. Evans also started against Loomis Chaffee last week, in a game which Choate won 9-5. Along with her superb pitching, Evans has been a valuable offensive asset to the softball team.
