Prep School Beat

Deerfield

As part of of Martin Luther King Jr. Day the noted historian, playwright and social activist, Howard Zinn addressed the student body. Mr. Zinn’s speech was broadcast to two other auditoriums to let as many people watch as possible.



Andover

Paul Mellon estate awards 2 million dollars to the institute for recruitment of teachers.



Exeter

Phillips Exeter Academy’s student-run newspaper, The Exonian, received a National Newspaper Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association. In addition, tutition will now be free to any admitted student whose family income is $75,000 or less.



Loomis Chaffee

Construction workers at Loomis this week discovered a time capsule from 1960 encased in a wall of their science building. The workers found the box while tearing down a wall in the Auditorium that they are renovating. Also, Sheila A. Culbert, interim vice president of communications, senior assistant to the president of Dartmouth College since 1998, and a history professor, will become the seventh head of The Loomis Chaffee School this year.



Hotchkiss

Rachael N. Beare was appointed Dean of Admission and Financial Aid. Because of the price of fuel and electricity at record levels this year, Hotchkiss is continuing to make investments in technology and alternative energy sources. Hotchkiss’ energy budget has doubled in the last six years to a current annual cost of $2 million. Part of the increased cost can be attributed to the school’s 30 percent growth in facilities.



St. Paul’s

The student body supported Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Republican John McCain in a campus primary held on January 8, reflecting a statewide trend among 18- to 24-year-old voters. The student vote was conducted anonymously through online balloting and coincided with New Hampshire’s state primary on Tuesday.



Lawrenceville

Lawrentian Jonathan Kalin ’09 returned from his winter break with a gold medal. Along with eleven other Jewish athletes from across the United States, Kalin played on the junior boys’ basketball team representing the US at the 2007 Maccabi Pan American Games, which were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina last month.
