Seniors Hit the Slopes
First Senior Activity of 2008 Muddy but Successful

After the special program ended on Tuesday, January 15, many seniors left the Paul Mellon Arts Center to change from their special dress apparel into warmer clothing more suitable for their form-wide activity—senior sledding.

Earlier that afternoon, the senior class received an e-mail from Ms. Dean informing them of the event. Ms. Dean wrote, “We’re going to give [senior sledding] a try (in case it’s the last snow of the winter!) although the few flakes we got today didn’t help the hill very much.” Despite the lack of snow on the hill, many seniors still attended the event and enjoyed themselves.

Noting that the seniors still managed to enjoy themselves amidst the muddy hill, class representative Alex Hillbrand ’08 said, “Despite a disappointing lack of snow and copious soppy puddles all down the hill, senior sledding was a huge success Tuesday night. Dozens and dozens of seniors flew down the hill and soared off the makeshift snow-pile jump. Matt McCullough '08 got 2 feet of air, no doubt, and landed quite like Michelle Kwan.”

Some seniors received minor injuries at the event, but they still said they enjoyed themselves. “It was interesting; a lot of people left with battle wounds. I personally injured myself going off a jump with Tessa Sacramone ’08. It was definitely worth it, though. Senior sledding was a good time, despite the fact that there was more mud than snow,” commented Grace Peard ’08.

Ms. Dean, Mr. Berghoff, Lauren Provini ’08, Ben Pascale ’08, and Alex Hillbrand ’08 organized and initiated the event. Those seniors who did not brave the frigid temperatures and muddy slope remained in the pool lounge sipping hot chocolate provided by the deans and class representatives.

Whether they stayed inside or flew down the hill, the seniors in attendance seemed to enjoy themselves. Many expressed hopes for “senior sledding round two.” Anna Boissard ’08 stated, “It was awesome. I hope it snows again though so we can have actual sledding as opposed to mud-sliding.” Peard added, “I think we need to have a senior sledding part two, when we have more than an inch of snow on the ground.”

Hillbrand also looks forward to another senior sledding event in the future: “Everybody was laughing and smiling and getting glorioussly muddy, and that makes me think that Senior Sledding Round 2, hopefully with more snow, will be an unbelievable success.”

In closing her e-mail, Ms. Dean wrote, “Senior camaraderie is what it’s all about!” In the end, the seniors said they enjoyed the time spent with their classmates and made the best of what little snow they had.
