Delivery Man Crashes into Spencer

By Charlie Rosenberg ’09

News Staff Reporter

On Saturday night at around eleven forty-five, the residents of Spencer House were stunned to see our beloved Ronnie’s Pizza delivery truck lose control, slide down the hill, and crash into the right side of the dorm with a pounding thud. The crash scared everyone in the dorm and especially an unnamed resident, who, thinking that the crash was a terrorist attack, immediately ran into the bathroom for cover. When the car hit the dorm its hood smashed upwards, the airbags deployed, and smoke engulfed it. Soon after the car made contact students were surprised to see Ronnie himself bolt out of the damaged vehicle and yell at a student holding a pizza box outside Quantrell, blaming the whole accident on him. The student subsequently ran away with the pizza box at the site of the undoubtedly perturbed Ronnie. Spencorian Peter Desrosier ’09 was one of the first on the scene, rushing outside in order to help the disgruntled pizza man and make sure he was all right. Desrosier says, “Ronnie appreciated the support, and also didn’t seem too angry about the car.” Then Advisor on Duty, Samuel Doak came down after hearing all the commotion, however it was just in time to watch Ronnie run back into his car and proceed to drive away. Mr. Doak decided to call campus security under the impression the incident was a “hit and run.”

In response to Mr. Doak’s call, two campus security officers arrived at our door and started to examine the scene of the accident. And although the damage was very minimal and only consisted of some slight damage to the wood paneling, campus security followed protocol and called the Wallingford Police Department. However, about 20 minutes after Ronnie had so quickly departed, he returned speedily in a different car. By now the Wallingford Fire Department was also on hand, complete with a siren blaring fire truck parked on the opposite side of North Elm Street.

Students also witnessed Officer Corngrove of the Wallingford Police Department park his cruiser adjacent to the fire truck and then surprisingly walk down to question the residents of Spencer House before he talked to Ronnie who was busy being questioned by Campus Security. Mathew Binder ’09 reluctantly volunteered to answer the Officer’s questions as the official witness and was forced to provide his name and telephone number in the case that anything needed to be followed up on in his report. Corngrove then joined Ronnie and the Campus Security officers next to North Elm and proceeded in conducting the routine police investigation. While this was going on we had since opened the front door of Spencer and were all huddling around it trying to figure out what they were saying and what was the reasoning behind Ronnie’s unannounced departure and then his prodigal return. Their conversation went on for another ten minutes or so, but unfortunately the students could only hear Ronnie’s accent accompanied with his excessive gesticulations most likely depicting the events leading up to the crash.

After the meeting one of the Campus Security officers came down to inform our dorm that everything was under control and that we should “get some sleep.” Dissatisfied with not knowing what happened, we tried to probe him for more information about the interview with Ronnie, however he responded evasively, “I’m not at liberty to say.”

Ever since that night there have been some intriguing questions about the crash and its mysterious aftermath. Why did Ronnie flee the scene in his damaged vehicle, only to come back in a different car? Did the anonymous student outside Quantrell really cause the accident? Why wasn’t Ronnie able to stop the car before he crashed into Spencer? All of these questions remained unanswered; however, the official report of the incident is a matter of public record and should be available in the next couple weeks.
