Student Council Beat

By Steven Choi ’10

News Reporter

“This year, the student council has put a lot of focus on continuing the idea of sustainability” says fourth form Vice President Leah Rosen, “We believe that it is an extremely important issue, and we are addressing it as best as we can.” This is but one of the issues on which the council is focusing on. The Student Council has many plans to improve the lives of students and faculty here at Choate.

The Student Council has recently proposed an idea that is likely to appeal to many: Ben Pascale ’08 suggested putting hammocks around campus. This would help students socialize while relaxing comfortably. Hammocks would be a tremendous improvement, the theory goes, and a cozier alternative to the chairs and benches students now use.

Another idea proposed, but declared impossible, was that of abolishing Saturday classes. Though this change would come with the consequence of having Wednesday classes after special programs, some of the students consider it preferable to the current Special Wednesday/Academic Saturday system. Because the Student Council was notified that this proposal was absolutely out of the question by John Ford, they are now brainstorming other ways to improve weeks with Academic Saturdays.

A proposal for a new community bike system is in the process of being ratified. With this new system, students could travel to farther-away buildings more easily. For example, a student almost late to their next class at the Science Center could use a community bike to get there quickly from wherever they are on campus.

The biggest project that the Student Council has recently been working on is the new coffee shop, which will open during conference periods in the Humanities Rotunda. This is one of the primary priorities of the Student Council, because the proceeds of the new coffee shop will go to charity in Africa. While these are the main issues currently under consideration by the Student Council, there are many more proposals in store as well.
