Each week, The News asks a member of the community several questions to express his or her opinons . This week: Mr. Caleb McArthur of the Math Department.
Where are you from originally? What college did you attend? How does the college environment compare to Choate?
I grew up in the Boston area, and attended the University of Pennsylvania. I don’t think it makes sense to compare life as a college student to life as a high school student.
Would you consider Choate to be a liberal environment or too conservative?
Politics and teaching math don’t mix.
Is this your first time teaching? If not, have you found teaching to be a rewarding experience so far? If so, is teaching at a place such as Choate an adjustment?
I have taught for 8 years prior to Choate. The classroom experience here compares favorably.
What would you consider to be the most interesting aspect of the subject that you teach? If you wanted to influence a Choate student to take the course that you teach, how would you sell it to them?
I enjoy the puzzle solving nature of mathematics and the feeling of satisfaction one gets from mastering strategies for solving nearly infinite variations of those puzzles.
