Prep School Beat

Deerfield

The Manhattan Brass, an award-winning brass ensemble, paid a visit to the Deerfield Academy on October 5th. This inspiring performance was not only presented to Deerfield students and faculty, but also to the surrounding community. Deerfield also welcomed Dr. Maas, author of New York Times Best-Seller Power Sleep, to lecture students about the importance of getting sufficient sleep.



Andover

Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Dalai Lama’s monastery are staying on the Andover campus from October 8th to October 12th. They will be hosting Tibetan music and rituals, and each performance is open to the public. The school has also recently discovered that twenty- one students attending Phillips Academy at Andover qualified to be National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.



Exeter

The math team at Exeter placed first in the national ARML math competition. If this is not impressive enough, a senior at Exeter won the gold medal at a math competition in China. Exeter hopes that this success will spark continual accomplishment throughout the student body.



St. Paul’s

They school year at St. Paul’s School was kicked off with a speech from Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont, as he urged the students to get involved in the community. As the year continued, the students and faculty at St. Paul’s celebrated as their headmaster announced the 135th annual “Cricket Holiday,” a idle day randomly given to them in the Fall, similar to Choate’s “President’s Day.”



Taft

This past August, like Choate, Taft also hosted the Disney movie, College Roadtrip, starring Raven-Symone and Martin Lawrence. The director of the film is Roger Kumble, known for his hits, The Sweetest Thing and Cruel Intentions.



Hotchkiss

Hotchkiss’ Speech and Debate Team prevailed in the Roxbury-Latin Parliamentary Debate Tournament this month, winning eight of fifteen possible awards. They also remained undefeated for the day. In addition, a longtime Hotchkiss administrator named Christopher K. Downs has been appointed as Interim Dean of the Admissions department. He took over for William Leahy who is now working in the Phillips Andover fund-raising department.



Loomis Chaffee

Loomis Chaffee recently announced the selection of three WALKS Scholars. The WALK program raises money for students in the greater Hartford area. In addition, Loomis announced the Barnes Service Award recipient for the 2007-08 school year, which rewards a student who is a good example of volunteerism.



Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville raised two hundred million dollars in their bicentennial campaign. In addition, eight Lawrenceville students from the class of 2008 were selected as semi-finalists in two National Merit Scholarship Programs.
