Choaties Tune In To 89.9 FM

By JungHa Lim ’09

News Staff Reporter

Choate’s Radio station, 89.9 FM WWEB, officially began broadcasting its fall programs on October 1. Choate students in all forms host the shows on Sundays through Thursdays. The student DJs offer a diversity of music and also accept song requests from listeners. Some DJs, including Sam Wheeler ’08, Nick Stefanelli ’08, and Tucker Bryan ’08, give listeners the opportunity to call in and discuss different topics on the air.

The variety of genres represented on Choate radio shows offers music pleasing to those with many tastes, from hardcore classic rock supporters to jazz listeners and those who prefer to listen to more recent music. Jesse Brent ’09, co-president of Choate Radio and host of “The Thursday Evening Express,” said he has “pretty eclectic tastes.” For example, in his first show, he “began the show with Elvis Costello, the second song was by Bo Diddley, the thirteenth by Nas and the last song was by TV on the Radio.”

Nina Tarnawsky ’08, co-president of the club with Brent and co-hosts of a show with Cordelia Blanchard ’08, explained that she generally plays “classic rock, like Springsteen, Bob Dylan…some jazz, and some 80’s hip-hop.”

However, Tarnawsky expressed concern that the radio station is underappreciated. She commented, “I don’t think it’s listened to enough, in my opinion, considering the quality of the content.” Brent noted: “There are a lot of DJs who are working hard on their shows and [they’d] love to have a lot of listeners.”
