Summer’s coming, and Choate has big plans for campus enhancement. Many projects have been planned for renovations on numerous buildings and areas around campus.
Facilities Services aims to improve the campus on many fronts, developing everything from faculty housing to parking lots, laying down new carpets, and installing fences.
Some of this summer’s initiatives include reconfiguring the ITS Conference Room, improving campus exterior lighting, replacing indoor oil tanks, repairing pipe insulation, revamping Hill House parking lot configuration, and installing new campus card access systems on dorms. In addition, the school will to solve less specific problems like unpainted faculty houses and weathered campus roofs.
Grimy carpets in the Paul Mellon Arts Center will be replaced on all floors, and a granite fence will be erected on Christian Street. Additionally, the pool common room will be repaired and the withering hemlocks on campus will be replanted. Moreover, smaller jobs will be taking place on campus like replacing the Winter “X” and Science Center doors.
The work is to be done by a group of various outside contractors from the local area, and will begin right after the Class of 2007 Commencement on June 4th. Although a handsome $2.5 million will be spent to complete these tasks, Paula Welch, director of Facilities, is assured that it’s all worth it.
With benefits including improved safety and aesthetics, Choate has high hopes for the improved campus for next year. We’ll all have to wait and see how the enhancements affect campus both in terms of security and visuals.
