Last weekend, the Boys Varsity Tennis team suffered their second loss of the season after losing to Deerfield Academy by the score of 4-3. The Wild Boars came into the match with much confidence since Deerfield had not beaten the Choate squad since 2001. However, Deerfield would let history be repeated. By securing the doubles point in a crucial tie-breaker at third doubles, Deerfield jumped into the singles round with all the momentum. The boys were now forced to win four of the six singles in order to win the match. With quick wins by Ben Gettinger ’07 at #1 and Brian McDermott ’08 at #6, the score was now 2-1 favoring the Blue and Gold. Max Mullen ’08 pulled a win in a very close match at #2. After losing at the #3 and #4 spots, the score was tied up 3-3 and all the attention was at court 13, where Derek Lubetkin ’08 was in a battle with Deerfield’s #5 player. Winning the first set, Lubetkin ran into trouble after cramping at the end of the second set. With no trainers in sight, Lubetkin was forced to finish the match without relief, losing a tight third set. The team will travel to Andover this weekend, hoping to defeated another tough squad.

On Saturday May 5, Boys Varsity Lacrosse defeated St. Luke’s School by the score of 19-2. Even though the St. Luke’s team scored the first and last goal of the game, Choate controlled the pace of the game by creating many offensive opportunities. Brooks Toth ’07 scored eight goals and had two assists to improve the team’s record to 4-5. The team will travel to the Hotchkiss School this weekend.
