Student Council Beat

By Andrew Kim ‘09

News Reporter
Last Thursday, October 19, the Student Council held a meeting in the Lt. Peirce Room in the Humanities building.

The first item brought up was a proposal for an extended senior discount at the school store. The Council proposed that the discount of 15% start in the winter term. The extension would result in more winter apparel being sold, giving the school store more profit. This discount could increase not only the school store’s profit, but also the school’s overall morale. With more seniors wearing Choate apparel, they will be able to express their school spirit.

A new proposal taken into consideration was a change in the requirements for Bounds. The Student Council requested that a 3-class cut, rather than a 2-class cut, to trigger Bounds. According to a source in Andover, their school allows students 5 free cuts before giving any disciplinary action. The members of the Student Council will look into the regulations of other New England schools before bringing this matter to Mr. Ford or Mr. Shanahan.

After the incessant requests of a certain student, the Council has agreed to request a change in toilet paper from the current brand to Charmin or something more comfortable. The current toilet paper is too rough and uncomfortable. Although this may be costly, the members of the Student Council proposed that there are many other things that can be sacrificed for the toilet paper. For example, the napkins distributed during sit-down lunches are unnecessarily thick, and they can be supplanted by normal napkins.

Finally, the Student Council discussed ways to increase alcohol and drug awareness and to decrease alcohol and drug use. Several draft proposals were suggested, and they will be examined this coming week.
