Wallingford residents have taken up the cause of Bawa, a village in the west province of Cameroon. Bawa has approximately 500 denizens threatened by two major public health issues: AIDS and malaria. Wallingford resident Dennis J. Richardson, a professor at Quinnipiac has created a new non-profit organization, the Bawa Health Initiative to help Bawa. This summer, Richardson and a group of volunteers went to Bawa to install bed netting and water filtration systems to decrease the risk for malaria. On Sunday, a benefit concert will be held at 3 pm in the First Congregational Church of Wallingford at 23 South Main St. The concert will feature Irish, Italian, Spanish and West African Music and choir groups from other area churches.

Connecticut, New York Beef Recall
Omaha Beef of Danbury, CT has recently recalled some 1,680 pounds of beef on Oct. 24th. The US Food Safety and Inspection Service claims the beef that had been distributed to restaurants in Connecticut and New York. The recall is voluntary. E. Coli lives in teh intestine. It is believed to be responsible for some 60 deaths and at least 73,000 infections each year in the United Satates. Side effects are bloddy diarrhea and dehydration.
Candidates for Conn. Senator Duke it Out In Round Three
The Garde Arts Center in New London was host to the third and final Conn. debate. As has been the pattern throughout the race, the debate focused on the issue of the War in Iraq. The televised debate lasted for one hour, and was marked by quick one-liners from Republican party nominee, Alan Schlesinger. Even after the three debates, the race remains esentially a two-man affair. With only two weeks remaining in the race, Lieberman still retains a 17-point lead over Lamont. Election Day is Nov. 7. There are currently no further debates scheduled between this debate and that date; however, Schlesinger challenged his two opponents to continue the debates, adding one or two more before the end of time.
Connecticut Lottery Doles Out $100,000
A White Plains, New York man won $100,000 in a Connecticut lottery. Michael Santora, a retiree, was the Grand Prize winner in the Oct. 14 Connecticut Lottery Corporation’s Treasure Island 2nd Chancer Drawing. Santora regularly plays the lottery when he visits his son who lives in Connecticut. He plans to celebrate his victory when his son returns from vacation.
