Boys Soccer Prevents Andover Sweep

By Kidon Seo ‘09

News Reporter
On Saturday, October 7, the Boys Varsity Soccer team fought hard against an undefeated Andover team to avoid an all out sweep of Choate teams.

The Blue, a highly skilled opponent, brought fierce competition to the Choate campus, but the Boars fended it off despite some missed opportunities.

Said Coach John Ford, “Andover had a very talented team. We had some good scoring opportunities in the second half but could not capitalize. The result of that day’s game came from a solid team effort.” Both teams had several promising scoring chances, but Choate unfortunately failed to score. Goalie Matt Winter ’07, supported by the Wild Boars’ talented defensive line, including Nico Dalton ‘08. Mark Nemec ‘07, Matt Sanger ‘07 and Matt Vivero ‘07 snuffed out Andover’s many scoring chances. Despite the strong performance on Andover Day, Coach Ford felt unsatisfied about how the team was doing this year. He said, “Compared to last year, our team has struggled somewhat. We have no star players. This year, the success of our team is going to depend on team effort.” He added that the team has good chemistry and support for each other.

Captain Ronald Coleman ’07 was very proud of how hard everyone played throughout the course of the game with Andover. He also stressed the need for improvement. He said, “We have not done as well as we had last year. At this point last season, the team was 4-0-1. We were undefeated and ranked #1 in New England. The loss of a few key senior players has been tough for the team. Last year’s motto was ‘refuse to lose’ and that’s what we need to do. With our good team chemistry and the willingness to work hard, I believe that we can be successful this year.”

The Boars faced another talented team in Brunswick School last weekend and battled to a 2-2 tie, with the Bears’ second goal comming in the last minue of the game. The squad will look to convert their solid play into a win next weekend at Hotchkiss who stands at 5-2-3 after beating Deerfield 1-0 last weekend.
