Seymour, CT - The Seymour United Methodist Church, a 19th Century architectural landmark, was ravaged by fire on Monday. The causes of the fire are still unknown; however, the extinguishing required thousands of gallons of water before it was finally put out at around 6 p.m. The church, which was built in 1891, was a magnificent site in Seymour and had stained glass imported from Italy that were, as one church trustee put it, “irreplaceable.” The fire was a great blow to the church, whose numbers are swelling in their quaint community. Pastor Joan Krawchick is still unsure whether they will replace or restore the sanctuary, but she believes that the fire was simply part of God’s plan upon viewing a rainbow’s stretching over the cupola.
Lieberman Stands Up in Second Debate
Joe Lieberman, after losing the Democratic primary to Greenwich businessman, Ned Lamont, says he hopes Democrats will take control of Congress. His want, however, is that the Democrats will also change their ways. Lieberman believes that if the Democrats gain control of Washington, they would be remiss if they did not change the tone of national politics. Challenger to three-term incumbent, and Connecticut Democratic Party nominee, Lamont, says Lieberman is to blame for this tome. The candidates, who also include Republican long-shot, Alan Schlesinger, faced off Wednesday in Hartford for the second of three debates.
CT Man Sent to Prison for Tax Protest
Easton, CT - A wealthy Connecticut man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for a tax protest. Robert Brinkman, a resident of Easton, refused to pay his taxes and was sentence on Monday. He had filed a tax return in which he reported only $5,000 in income for 2003, when he had actually made almost $3 million. Brinkman claimed that he did not believe income tax laws authorized the government to tax earned income from wages. He pleaded guilty in July to filing false tax returns and to a stolen property charge. Since then, he has paid $1.5 million to the IRS.
