On Thursday, October 5th, the Student Council assembled in the Lt Peirce Room for their weekly meeting. Several proposals were brought up for discussion.
The Student Council first considered having the senior discount at the school store pushed forward to start in the winter term. A senior discount of 15% at the school store was supposed to take effect in the spring term. Having an earlier start to the discount may encourage the sale of warm Choate outfits in winter and generate more profit for the store. The Student Council intends to bring the matter up with Mr. Yanelli.
The proposal to extend Internet hours until midnight for fifth form students was again brought up. Although Mr. Ford did not appear wholeheartedly supportive, the Student Council still felt that such an extension would be reasonable and beneficial; they have delegated Jeff Rosen, school president, to discuss the issue with Mr. Ford for a second time.
Day student privileges were next on the agenda. Upon their arrival to campus, day students are not technically allowed to leave until their last commitment is over. A proposal to allow day students to roam in town whenever they are free was debated. However, this issue did not gain sufficient support since this would be unfair for boarding students who may only leave if they sign out and check out.
With the recent increase of soda prices from one dollar to a dollar twenty-five, the Student Council considered a counter reduction of Laundromat prices from a dollar fifty to a dollar twenty-five, an idea that was quickly dismissed by Mr. Peard, “What would be the connection between the two companies?” Soda and laundry prices will not undergo any changes for the present.
The quality of the food served in the dining hall raised an issue as well. The fruit served by Aramark is often not in season. It was mentioned that Choate would be better off buying a larger variation of ripe fruit that will actually be eaten, rather than by wasting money on “green oranges”. This suggestion did not reach a definite conclusion, though the Student Council will meet with Aramark on Wednesday, October 11th.
Lastly, the Iraq Organization program proposed by Mr. Shanahan last Tuesday, dedicated to helping the soldiers fighting in the Middle East, was well received by the Student Council. They are hoping to man a table in the upcoming Harvest Fest where students can stop and write letters that will be sent to soldiers who are posted away from home. The Student Council will also be visiting VA hospitals, to see the soldiers who have returned from service.
These ideas will be looked into, and next week’s Student Council will hopefully have follow-ups for some of these proposals.
