The new school year started off with an unexpected treat for members of the faculty. Everyone who attended the first faculty meeting on Monday, September 4, 2006 in the Getz Auditorium received an iPod shuffle (512MB). The music players were handed out by Headmaster Edward Shanahan himself and the gesture was very much appreciated by the faculty.
The iPods were meant to bear a slogan along the lines of “Choate for the Future!” This slogan was to be used for a planned capital campaign sponsored by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
Due to a revision of the slogan, the initial batch of iPods became obsolete, and a new batch of iPods was kindly purchased by an alumnus thus awarding the faculty a unique opportunity to receive the originals.
With current retail prices for the devices at the Apple store running for about $69 apiece, this was a generous gift on behalf of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations to over one hundred faculty members.
Although the entire faculty was not quite clear on the details of the distribution of the iPods, the gifts were well received. The sentiment among the majority of the teachers was captured by English teacher Mr. David Loeb who said, “It was a very nice thing to do…sure I liked it, what’s not to like?”
