Student Council Beat

By Kristen Raddatz ‘09

News Reporter
On Thursday, September 21st, the Student Council had their second meeting of the year. Many ideas were brought to the table, and several proposals passed.

The first topic on the agenda was the possibility of excusing six-class students from sit-down lunches. With their heavy work loads, some of these students argued that they “need a break” and that the mandatory lunches were taking up time better spent studying or sleeping. This question was raised last year but dropped when Mr. Ford severely opposed it. It met with no more success this year: when the proposal was brought to Mr. Ford’s attention for the second time, it was once again refused.

Next up were the fourth form proposals. At last week’s class committee meeting, only one person showed up. The fourth form president, disappointed in this lack of enthusiasm, wished to draw more students to the meetings by providing snacks. This proposal passed unanimously, and also raised the possibility of making class committee an official club. This motion was also passed unanimously and will hopefully breathe new life into the class committees.

The sixth form representatives then brought forward a proposal for keeping the Athletic Center open longer on weekend nights for students who wished to play basketball, among other sports, instead of sitting in the SAC. Many members of the council responded enthusiastically, and the proposal was passed.

Lastly, the fifth form representatives proposed pushing back the junior classes’ internet shut-off to later at night. They currently have the same shut-off time as the fourth formers. The fifth formers argued that since a typical junior has harder classes and more work than a typical sophomore, juniors should be given lengthier internet access. This argument held enough weight with the Student Council to pass as well.
