Monday, September 11th marked the five year anniversary of September 11th, 2001, one of the most tragic days in American history. Choate students honored those killed in the attacks by pausing for a moment of reflection during the ten minute passing period between their last two afternoon classes.
“I think that [9/11] was one of those days where if you were old enough you will always remember where you were when you heard about it, and it’s an event always worth taking some time to reflect upon on its anniversary,” said Dean of Students John Ford.
During the ten minutes of reflection the bells of the Seymour St. John Chapel rang throughout campus. Choral director Ralph B. Valentine played traditional American anthems including “God Bless America.”
Student participation in the reflection period varied. Many students took time to reflect, but some on campus were disappointed by a seemingly general lack of awareness.
Mr. Ford remarked, “I think [the reflection] was mixed… some people, frankly, never even noticed, and some people forgot about it… but I also saw people standing and pausing while the bells rang.” He added, “it was nice, but it would have been nicer if everyone had remembered and if everyone had been aware.”
Another pleasant touch to the day was a lavish flower bouquet set up in the dining hall, honoring the anniversary. The flower arrangement was donated by the parents of a member of the Choate class of 2002, who was in his senior year on the day of the attacks.
