Student Council Beat

By Paige Smith ‘09

News Reporter
The final Student Council meeting of the year began with the continued discussion of Headmaster Shannahan’s generally frowned-upon dress code compromise. The official proposal was presented to the Student Council on May 18. The proposal was formalized to include boys wearing shirts and ties, but no jacket. Shorts and short sleeve shirts would be permissible for boys as well. For girls, the dress code would remain essentially the same, but with stricter enforcement. In return, there would be no dress code any time after the class day, including at dinner. The proposal was not passed, largely because it was seen as unfair to the boys. Only three members supported the proposal while seven opposed it.

The meeting also proposed changes for the Choate Mail Room that will be put into affect next year if passed. The proposal explained that as a Choate policy, “The school discourages students from keeping large sums of money in their possession.” This policy is difficult to abide by when currently the Choate Mail Room is open only from 8am until 12pm on Saturdays, and not at all on Sundays. The Student Council’s proposal suggested that the Mail Room remain open longer and later on Saturdays. Most students are not even awake at 8am on Saturday when it opens. The change will help to accommodate students’ plans on weekends and follow accordingly with the school policy on money. The Student Council unanimously agreed with the proposal.

The Student Council adjourned for the summer with high hopes for the coming fall.
