Art Club Provides Crafts, Fun, and Friends

Finger painting, charcoal drawings, food sculpturing, you name it: the Art Club does just about anything and everything. Meeting once a week on Monday from 6:30 to 7:15, the art club provides a wide range of activities that almost anyone can participate in easily.

“No one is bad at art.” This is the motto of Kathy Heflin ’07, the president of the Art Club. No one is allowed to say that they are bad at art in her club. She claims that “It is by no means just for people who consider themselves ‘artistic.’” Of course, it may upgrade one’s artistic skills a little bit; according to Caroline Wilson ’09, joining the art club has given her “artistic abilities a little boost,” and Carlin Yuen ’06 pointed out that he gets to “develop my [his] fine artistic skills” and “check out other people’s art.” This is most likely true, yet the purpose of this club lies somewhere else.

“Our main purpose is to allow a time each week for kids to come and relax and do something fun. It’s for those that love art and just don’t do it otherwise because they’re too busy, and also for people that just like messing around with paint and crayons while chatting with their friends. ” Kathy says.

Interviews with the two major participants in Kathy’s club made it clear that her purpose was fulfilled. When asked what inspired them to join, Caroline and Carlin both said in unison, “I love art.” They also both agreed that they were enjoying the experience very much. Not only that, but the art club also proves to relieve a lot of stress during the weekday.

The Art Club is original, fun, and open to anyone who has an imagination. The meetings continue for about 45 minutes so they aren’t time-consuming at all, and they give everyone something to look forward to at the end of a hectic day. It is a great opportunity for people here at Choate who love art, and for those who just like to meet new people.
