On the Court With... Eliot Jia '06

By Mark Nemec ‘07

News Staff Reporter
Name: Eliot Jia

Form: 6

Hometown: Shanghai, China

Sport: Tennis

Future College: Middlebury

Role On The Team: Eliot has earned his spot as the captain of the Boys Varsity Tennis Team through his passion for the game and his leadership characteristics. Eliot has been a reliable member of the varsity squad for the past four years and has been consistent with his play. His skill and fervor for the game has placed him on the top of the ladder, as the number one for the boys in the past four years.

Tennis History: From the age of seven, Eliot has had a racquet in hand. Growing up in Hong Kong, Eliot trained with an elite group from the Hong Kong Tennis Association for four years. His daily training consisted of two hours of on court action in addition to fitness and conditioning. Eliot’s dedication to training stems from his belief that “the only way to get better, is to play a lot.” Eliot also plays in various New England tournaments to hone his skills.

Goals For The Year: Although a Founders League Championship may be out of reach for this year’s team, Eliot is focused on the upcoming New England Championships. Eliot aims to contend for the NEPSITT title as well as contribute to the team score for Team New Englands. Last year the boys fell a game short of capturing the New England title, and look to reclaim their spot as New England’s best. Eliot also uses the tennis season to “individually improve his game for the summer circuit.”

Future Aspirations: Next season, Eliot will be moving on to Middlebury College located in upstate Vermont. There, Eliot hopes to develop his skills further and garner a “Division III National Championship.”

Favorite Part Of Tennis: “The reason why I enjoy the game so much is that it combines physical and mental toughness,” says Eliot. “It is not a sport where you rely on others to bail you out, but you have to rely on yourself. You either win or you lose.”

Favorite Player: Pete Sampras. “He was the best player to ever play the game.”
