Choate lost many of its best members in 1996, as sixteen administrators and teachers left the school for various reasons. Notable vacancies created by this tidal wave of goodbyes included the Dean of Students, the Director of Admissions, Registrar, and Business manager, as well as numerous notable teachers. Each had his or her own reason for leaving, but all were sad to be leaving the school, and all expressed that they would always remember the community and school. This week in ’96 thus was a week of farewells, and of a new face for the school.

Half a century ago, 300 mothers descended on Choate’s campus for Mothers’ Day, a 16 year tradition. Led by Mrs. Ledyard S. Bowen, concluding her three-year term, the Mothers’ Association invaded the campus to enjoy a weekend of quality time with their sons. The mothers witnessed the announcement of numerous offices for the Choaties, including the entire student council, as well as The Brief, The News, and many other committees, and attended a series of special events with their sons.
