On Tuesday March 4th, the Choate Mathematics Team traveled to Danbury High School to compete in the Connecticut State Association of Math Leagues contest. The team was victorious, ending with a first place finish in the medium-sized school division. Choate has placed first in the competition 11 out of the past 12 years.

The Math Team consists of Jeff Rosen ’07, PengTao Teng ’07, Yifan Cao ’08, Stephanie Choi ’09, Aditya Rajagopalan ’09, and Atle Selberg ’08 and is coached by Choate mathematics teacher Mr. David Doster.

The CSAML is an umbrella organization of separate math leagues in different parts of Connecticut. Choate placed first in the Greater New Haven League and went on to compete with some fifteen other schools from across the state.

“I love math myself, and I enjoy explaining it and working with kids. I enjoy the competitive aspect of math as well. I was involved in math competitions as a kid. I also ran math contests in New Jersey. These are some of the reasons why I chose to coach the math team here at Choate,” said Doster.

The CSAML competition was started in the 1970s. It consists of six individual rounds, each on a different topic. The team with the most points at the end of all six rounds wins.

“Our performance was pretty solid across the board...although Choate does usually win this contest, we were still proud to secure a top finish,” said captain Jeff Rosen ’07. Freshman Stephanie Choi ‘09 earned a perfect score during the individual rounds and secured the First Place Underclassman trophy.

Next, the Choate mathletes will move on to the New England regional competition in Canton, Mass. on April 28th. Kiran Pendri ’06 will be replacing Atle Selberg ’08 on the team when the mathletes head north for regionals.
