Monday, April 10th, fifth former Noelle Hashim ’07 was elected to be the next Day Student Representative to the Student Council. Choate day students picked Hashim over four other candidates who also ran for the position.
The Day Student Rep is an important position within the Choate community.
“I address the concerns of day students in the Student Council, because day students aren’t usually well represented. So basically, I represent all the day students at Choate, and speak for what they want,” said Hashim, who is excited to receive this position and looks forward to voicing the concerns of day students.
Drew Ruben ‘07, one of the four other candidates, said, “I’m definitely happy for Noelle and I’m sure she will do a great job in fulfilling this position.”
Hashim expressed her surprise at winning the election, saying, “I was surprised to win the election, because usually I don’t run for anything, and I wasn’t even planning on running for the position. But then I realized that I care about day students. My brother was a four year day student, and I’m a three year day student. So why not let these experiences help me represent the day student population?” She added, “There are many things that I don’t like about being a day student. The day students need numerous changes at Choate, and I am here to bring about these changes.”
Hashim has many plans for what she would like to do during her term in office. She has already spoken with Mark Dee ’07, the school’s newly appointed Vice President, on how to improve the day student experience.
She explained, “I basically have one goal for day students, and that is to have them feel part of the Choate community. Day students and boarders are greatly segregated, and this needs to change. This segregation starts right off at the beginning of the year. I want to make sure that day students go to dorms, and socialize with boarders.” She added, “[Day students] would be so much happier if they knew what was happening in dorms at night, and if they came to campus on weekends. It is my priority to make sure that this starts happening.”
The day student population has already voiced concerns. The most important issues include cell phone policies and parking space. Hashim commented, “Clearly, day students want changes to many policies which they don’t agree with. This is something at the top of my agenda which I will work hard to change.” She is passionate about making life as enjoyable as possible for day students, and she promises to devote herself to achieving her goals.
Hashim understands that day students are being left out of the boarding experience, and she knows what day students need in order to have a good time at Choate. She feels that she will be able to make life for day students as pleasant as possible.
“I love all the day students, and I just want them to be happy. I’ll do things that they want, whether it be mug nights or parties. I want the day students to feel that their decision of being a day student at Choate was a good one. So day students, get ready for a great year at Choate,” declared Hashim.
Hashim will serve with the student council as the Day Student Representative until members of the class of 2008 run for the position next year.
