Fashion Forward
With Kiki Kazickas ‘07

Although spring has arrived in name, it still feels like winter to many of us. This strange mixture of weather means it’s a little too early to shed layers and show some skin (which should be kept to a minimum, anyway). Incorporating spring’s top styles into the currently cold, dress coded environment at Choate is the key to success. Don’t pull out your miniskirts just yet; rather, wear bright colored cords to incorporate a warm spring feel. Similarly, cuffed pants and long shorts can keep your legs a little less chilly than a bare - all skirt. When skirts do make their way into your wardrobe, opt for ones that are long and flowy...walking to class really is not the time or place for booty bearing attire. Color, color, color! Go bright and bold with big prints and lavish hues this season. On a contradictory note though, white is the quintessential color for spring. Although dressing in head to toe white may seem a bit overdone, this clean-cut color really looks best when paired with itself. Match funky, flowing tops with white jeans for a relaxed look.

Spring Accessories: the time has come for girls to stray away from thick-strapped flip-flops like Rainbows, and don more dainty style sandals. Jack Rogers, J. Crew, and Mystique seem to be a personal favorite of many stylish Choaties. For those who are still in favor of plain flip-flops, thinner strapped styles will make all the difference in minimizing the appearance of “man feet.” Don’t kill your feet in heels or wedges when walking around campus: be comfortable and practical in flats or sandals. For cool spring days, a classic look for Choate men is khakis and oxford shirts paired with docksiders. This season boat shoes are available in a variety of colors.

Clearly, big, dark sunglasses are in. Keeping with this idea of looking very chic (and of course protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays) can be updated with colored sunglasses. You cannot go wrong with white, navy, or pink bold bug-eyed sunglasses. The accessory most noticeable on the Choate campus is, of course, the “big” bag. Besides the obvious use book carrying, bags can add flair to your outfit. Kick backpacks out of your daily class attire and replace them with oversized, colored bags like those from Longchamp or Herve, or use a big canvas tote, like your mom brings to the beach. Boys on the other hand, please no man purses or messenger bags. For you, backpacks really are the best bet.

Most importantly, appearance is key. No great outfit can make up for scaly, alligator legs. So remember to exfoliate, moisturize, and of course slather on the SPF to look great and protect pale, fair winter skin. (For those who have been visiting “Miami Beach” all winter, though, sunscreen can be omitted, as it seems you do not fear sunburn, wrinkles, or skin cancer.) Have fun with your wardrobe. Relax and don’t be afraid to try something new! Individualism projects great fashion.

Best Dressed Girl: Charlis Floyd ’07 for her unique style and awesome handbag. Lauren Citrome ’06 states, “I knew of Charlis’s bag, before I even knew who Charlis was.”

Best Dressed Boy: Alex Wiske ’07 for his individual style and most notably bringing his own spin to the usually drab sport coat.
