“Great location! Easy access to the SAC! Tight-knit community! Great group of girls!” Chelsea Laverack ‘07 just wouldn’t stop talking when asked about the unique characteristics of Edsall. Talk about dorm pride! Every one of the residents of the house-like sophomore/junior dorm absolutely loves living there. Why? Well, since they are all unique, they give a variety of answers.
First and foremost: the advisers and prefects make the dorm an especially entertaining place to live in. Nina Tarnawsky ‘08 simply puts it, “Well, we have Mr. Farrell—he’s the man! And, of course, there’s Ms. Lease. She plays Scrabble with us!” Mr. Farrell, described by Tarnawsky as being “fun,” brings a “strange chemistry” to the three-story dorm. “You get to see a whole different side of Mr. Farrell,” says Nina, who’s incredible guessing (or mathematical?) talents won the dorm a pizza party with the Shanahans earlier this year. Mr. Farrell’s family is also a big part of the dorm, and most of the girls have babysat their many children. Kiki Kazickas ‘07 has admitted defeat to Tagan Farrell in every game of UNO they have played, and the girls always give in to buying Caitlin’s candy.
Not only are the dorm advisers and prefects fantastic, but it seems as if other dorms just do not have as much fun as the Edsall girls do. Deluxe birthday cakes, elaborate hot fudge sundae making parties on the Farrells’ patio, after-curfew Subway runs – the dorm bonding just does not stop. Not to mention, they also enjoy outings to Neptune Diner or Ann’s after exams.
Prefects Stephanie Stock and Lauren Citrome also contribute greatly to the Edsall community, and John Goods is, of course, considered a part of the dorm. The companionship apparent between all of the girls is “what Edsall will do to you,” says one inhabitant. It is known to turn enemies into best friends: it’s all smiles inside the brown house. The girls are “so close that [they] even made showering in the basement fun!” Now, any girls dorm that can make showering in the basement fun, must know how to have a good time.
Sitting with the thirteen girls in their very cuddly common room shows how well they all get along, what an eclectic group they are, and explains why they say they end up talking together for hours after check-in. Edsall truly welcomes everyone who walks into their “house.” There is no question why it will be at the top of many lottery lists this upcoming spring. But what lucky 13 will be part of the next Edsall family?
