Fashion Forward

Lauren Citrome ‘06

News Staff Writer
While I would like to say that Choate students read on average five books over the Spring Break, I know I would be lying. For the average Choate student, Spring Break is the time for goofing off, catching up on the O.C, preseason training for spring sports, and shopping. Basically, we do everything that we do not have the time or ability to do at school. Since television and sports aren’t quite pertinent to my attempt at a Fashion column, I am going to discuss spring shopping and trends. I once heard a young male Choatie say that his favorite part about CRH was watching his female classmates try to hold down their skirts on windy spring days. That being said, I would like to advocate the revival of shorts for girls this spring. Last year we saw lots of Bermuda shorts around campus; I was pleased. I expect to see other trendy pedal pushers this spring, perhaps paired with leather boots on those colder spring days. I would also be curious to see if shorter shorts would be in dress code...I know short skirts aren’t ok, but I feel that teachers might find shorts to be more appropriate. Might as well give it a try—we’re only young once. This next note goes for both genders: PLEASE, NO MORE PASTELS! I can’t stand them. Did you ever think about how pastels are normal colors that just gave up? Like pink - it’s almost red, but it never quite made it there. If you insist on sporting some those silly almost-colors, at least wear just one at a time. There’s no need to wear a pastel purple polo with mint green shorts. You just look like a walking stick of cotton candy. Show some self respect and wear real colors. And finally, there’s something I’d like to nip in the bud, before it even begins – the abuse of tanning beds. I think it’s clear that sitting in a cylinder of UVA rays causes skin cancer, even if you only tan occasionally. The damage you do at a tanning salon can never be undone and every tan increases your risk. Beyond that, looking super tan is not attractive. In fact, it’s just sketchy. How could you naturally get so tan in the spring? Dark tans take months to develop, so if you’re looking extra brown this spring everyone will know that you’ve been spending time and energy on giving yourself skin damage. That is not hot. Also, not everyone even looks good with a tan, just like not everyone looks good with blonde hair. Stay away from the cancer beds and just be yourself.

Best Dressed – Girls: Lauren DiMatteo ’08 (Whoa, what a coincidence; every girl in Edsall has been best dressed now!)

Best Dressed – Boys: Jon Koh ’06. His jeans are so nice that I would like to borrow them, though they might actually be too small for me. You look great, Koh, and I know I can count on you to not wear pastels this spring.
