If you have ever been term abroad, thought about going to Europe, had an interest in other cultures, or even heard that there were countries besides America and had the slightest inkling to find out what they are like, this movie is a def see. “L’Auberge Espagnole (The Spanish Hotel)” is the beautiful story of a prude Frenchie who travels to study in Spain, and ends up living in a cramped apartment with six other students from all around Europe. As he, Xavier, is quoted, “Later, much later, back in Paris, each harrowing ordeal will become an adventure. For some idiotic reason, your most horrific experiences are the stories you most love to tell,” and thus the crazy account of his year in Barcelona. Love affairs, homework, exploration, drugs, and the overall need to find out what to do in life surround Xavier until he decides to break out of his comfort zone, take the advice of a lesbian roommate, and live Barcelona the way his roommates do. Although you might need subtitles to understand the dialogue (it is in many languages including French, Spanish, Italian, German, and a little English) anyone who has any experience with Europe can relate to this movie. You instantly will want to be living in the apartment with Xavier and his friends. There is nothing more thrilling than discovering a city in a foreign country; language barriers only make the adventure that more exciting, so grab a bucket of palomitas, some amis, and have a good notte, because this movie will make you happy, in love with Europe, and leave you wishing you took more languages.
