Athlete: Greg Sturges Form: Sixth Hometown: Cheshire, CT Weight Class: 152 lbs. Wrestling Background: Greg started wrestling in second grade for a youth team in Cheshire, which he now helps coach.
Recent Accomplishments: This season, Greg has come out on fire, posting a 14-0 record on the season.
Accomplishments at Choate: As a second year captain, Sturges leads the Boars squad by finishing top five in the Class A championships since his freshman year. This is his fourth year on varsity, and each season he has had a personal winning record.
Biggest Moment in Wrestling: Last year at New England’s, Greg moved up a weight class just before the meet and was placed against the number one seed. Sturges made New England history; he was the first person ever to knock off the number one seed in the first round.
Off-season Training: Greg works in a gym, enabling him to be able to lift year-round. He then starts running and wrestling weeks before the season starts.
Favorite Aspect of Wrestling: He says, “It’s the only sport that you really get to hurt people, and that’s kind of the goal of the sport.” Greg has tried almost all other sports at the youth level, but wrestling was the one that he really enjoyed.
Goals for season: Sturges hopes to win the Class A Championship and finish high in England’s with an undefeated season. He also wants to put up a good showing at Nationals
Future Plans: Greg was accepted early to Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and will continue his wrestling career there.
