Monkey Love Becomes El Amor del Mono

By Rachel Kauder Nalebuff ‘08

News Staff Reporter
Two little trees, one to the left and on to the right. Underneath the right tree sit Man 1 and Woman 1, with gorilla like features, kissing. Underneath the left tree, Man 2 and Woman 2 are doing the same. When they stop kissing, they scratch their armpits as if they were monkeys. They kiss again until they find it boring.

This, comrades, is the setting for the first scene in Los Esclavos, the student-directed Spanish play, which will hold auditions today in the Humanities Rotunda from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The play, written by Antonio Martinez Ballesteros, follows the development of two couples. From apelike beginnings, the couples “progress” till one couple enslaves the other. Craftily using a minimalist style, Ballesteros leaves the audience with a dark message: capitalism is the root of all evil. Written and performed in Spanish, this one-act attack on materialism is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who likes to act, use Spanish, and is looking for a relaxed way to get into the art scene at Choate. Contact either director—Rachel Kauder Nalebuff ‘08 or Jen Bashian ‘08—with any questions.
