Our Hopefulness And Our Prayers

On Monday, November 28th, Pia Crawford-Silva ’07 was severely injured in an automobile accident in her hometown of West Hartford, Connecticut. Choate students returned from Thanksgiving break the next day to the news of the accident, which cast a sorrowful shadow over the start of the new term. At press time, Pia remains in stable but very serious condition at St. Francis Hospital in West Hartford. She has not regained consciousness since the accident, though there are promising signs, Dean of Students John Ford has said after speaking to Pia’s family members. We hope that by the time you read this, those promising signs will have come to fruition. The Editorial Board of The News extends its deepest condolences to Pia’s family, close friends, and all those affected by this tragedy. We have had the sincere pleasure of working with Pia in her role this fall as a staff reporter for The News, and we are hopeful and confident that we will again have the privilege of editing her articles sometime in the future. In the past two weeks, the Choate community has come together to support Pia and her speedy recovery. Even in the face of such a grave accident, students and faculty alike have maintained a steadily positive outlook, offering an abundance of support through cards and flowers – and great hopefulness and prayer. Such strong support must not ebb even in the midst of the looming grief and uncertainty such a tragedy brings; in the coming days and weeks, we must continue to rally behind Pia and keep her in our hearts, minds, and prayers. And in a time when the stresses of school, adolescence, and college applications can seem to carry the weight of the world, we must take from this accident a reminder, though a painful one, about the fragility of life. Everything we so often take for granted – our health, our friends and family, all that we have been blessed with – can be shaken in an instant.
