Student Council Beat

By Jeriel Ong '08

News Staff Reporter
This past week’s Student Council meeting on October 27th was informal and only a brainstorm of ideas of what proposals the Council would be backing in the future. They discussed a possible extension of Internet hours of one hour on Friday and Saturday nights.

Such an extension would allow the Internet to stay on until 12:30 A.M on Fridays and until 1:00 A.M. on Sundays.

There were many ideas brought up from the 5th form regarding the sit-down lunches. For example, if one had a test the period following the sit-down lunch, he/she would not be required to go. Or, if one had six classes, perhaps he would only need to go to one sit-down lunch a week.

A member from the Diversity Task Force came to the Student Council meeting looking for ideas for a mix-it-up day on November 15th, which is nationally accepted for a “mix-it-up” day. The purpose of such a day is to embrace the diversity of the school.

The Diversity Task Force thought of a lunch in which members of a table would be diverse and there would be prompts for conversation, but that seemed too much like a sit-down lunch. A dialogue group or a showing of a video regarding our diversity was also mentioned, though nothing was formally decided. Any other ideas should be submitted to a member of the Student Council.

Energy conservation was also discussed in light of Choate’s increasing energy bill. Several ideas of how Choate could reducethe costs were discussed. Incentives for conserving energy werealso discussed.
