Development’s Wish List: Better Than the Neiman Marcus Holiday Catalog

By The News Staff

Still in need of ideas for some last minute Christmas gifts? This holiday season, Choate’s Development Office is here to help.

The Development section of the Choate web site lists a variety of “Capital Funding Priorities,” many of which would make splendid stocking stuffers for loved ones far and wide.

The Office writes: “With your help we can preserve one of Choate’s most beloved and historic structures, modernize and replace outdated athletic facilities and student housing, and provide deserving students with the opportunity to fulfill their academic potential and achieve their future goals.”

The top gift this year – the Development Officer’s own Xbox 360 or Tickle Me Elmo, one might say – buys you the name of your choiceon a Choate dormitory. The price? A mere $3 million.

For those on a tighter budget, $500,000 is good for a named faculty apartment, while $250,000 will let your family’s name live on for generations in a dormitory common room. And the Development Office even has a special bargain-rate naming opportunity for those pinching pennies: a named dormitory room, at $100,000, or roughly $1,250 per square foot.

Other options include $1.5 million for a “day student center” and $750,000 to renovate a Choate house into the new bookstore.

For bookworms, there are many academicrelated Christmas present possibilities, including named laboratories, classrooms, faculty offices, common rooms, and library study rooms – all for the Black Friday-esque price of no more than $300,000. And the ultimate last-minute stocking stuffer? A named “student study carrel” in the Andrew Mellon Library for a mere $25,000.

Call the Development Office at (203) 697-2221 now. With Christmas only two weeks away, how can you afford not to fork over $3 million for a bronze plaque on Choate’s newest dorm?
